I was once shown that that with a black and white image there is a way of making all the white become transparent but the black stays. That way, you can color in the image by using separate layers underneath it.

How can I make all the whites on an image transparent but retain all the black? (Besides using a magic eraser; it doesn’t work that well.)

I am using Adobe Photoshop 7.0, and I am using an Anthlon XP laptop.

There are many ways. Here are a couple:

In Photoshop, you can set your layer blend mode to Multiply. This’ll knowck out the whites pretty easily.

Or you can open up the layer blending options, hold down the alt key and click on the leftmost triangle of the white slider for "This Layer" and drag to the left. This’ll knock out the white and leave the black.

Another couple of ideas.

1. Create a layer on top of your image and completely fill it with the color you want the white areas to become. Then set this layer’s mode to "Multiply".

or

2. This one works only your if image is entirely black and white–not shades of grey. Make sure that your image layer is not called "Background". The choose the magic wand, deselect the "Contiguous" option and click on any white area. This will select all white pixels; delete all of them. Then create a layer under your image and fill it with any color you like. The areas that used to be white are now transparent, so the new color will show through.
