Can I move the fonts folder that PS uses, in order to speed up my startup time/ memory requirements? I really don’t need them loaded ALL the time( I use The Font Thing )but at the same time, would moving them affect using the prog negatively?

In general, the place that a program looks for specific files is either fixed in the source code or recorded in the Registry and accessed by the program each time it starts up. The question, which I don’t know the answer to, is how PS-CS locates them. If there’s a program configuration option to specify the location of this folder, then by all means you can move them to, perhaps, a removable drive like a CD-ROM reader, but then this media would have to be in that drive each time the program starts. I think that, in general, the answer to your question is, No, it wouldn’t work.

Speculation is not necessary.

Adobe application specific fonts are here: Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/Fonts

Thanks for the information. The question still remains, Does the program require the fonts to be in that directory or is there a Registry entry that directs it to there? If you’re comfortable enough to scan the Registry for an entry, use START | RUN | regedit to open the Registry editor and navigate to, I’m making an educated guess here,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Photoshop\{whatever_the_ve rsion_is} and look for some entry that specifies that directory. I can say for sure that there isn’t any in v5.5; all there are are entries for the location of the program directory in Program Files and the location of the plug-in directory.

If I want to add a PS7 font to PS CS, can I just copy from the PS7 fonts folder and paste to the PS CS fonts folder?

No registry entry, nor preferences options.

You will note that the directory is ‘common’, which means it is available to other Adobe programs (which have additional fonts directories for program specific differences such as merged fonts in Illustrator).

This was the issue for me, really: I have AI, as well as Streamline and a couple of version of Acrobat Reader: if I moved the folder, would my comp spontaneously combust?

I think I have a reason to bother with setting a save point…I’ll let you know how it goes….
