Just installed PS 8.0 CS on a P-III laptop w/ Win XP Pro SP-1 fully updated. Reg’d and Activated OK. Go to launch and after the splash screen I get this error: The procedure entry point UnMapSLFixArray could not be located in the Dynamic Link Library KERNEL.DLL. Hit OK to dismiss and in a moment, I get the exact same error. Hit OK and CS is up. Tried a sample bunch of pics and effect things – looks like it’s working. Exit. Relaunch, same 2 errors. Tried more functions – looks OK. Exit and reboot, then relaunch – same 2 errors – looks like it’s still working. Poked around in here and reset prefs (Ctl-Alt-Shift) – no love.

The quandry, do I just put up with this or try to fix it. Searched the Web for UnMapSLFixArray – one article dated 1991. PS 7.0 TryOut was used a month or so ago and uninstalled but after CS – maybe a tragic oversight. Searched on this site – nothing found. You all know what’s going to happen – I’m going to have this giant project loaded up in here someday with a nice tight deadline and this error or something relatede to it is going to be my death!

(Added a few moments later) Now my copy of Illustrator v10 gives me the same error! Only one occurance instead of two. Never did that before. OH boy!!!

How about a clue out there – anyone?

Thanks.

sounds like a errant plug in is hitting that call. kernal errors are not good. i’d generally suggest an OS format and reinstall.

Thanks Dave. I just reinstalled WinXP Pro. I did not reformat down to ground zero, I simply reinstalled from setup.exe. Anyway, this didn’t work I still get the same error – twice. After stuggling for a while I loaded up Illustrator to work on something and -bam- same error comes up (only once) there. So now I’m really worried, backed out, and fired up Corel Painter 7. Bam – same error on that one too!

So, I’m really confused now. What is UnMapSLFixArray and what is it looking for in KERNEL? I’ve also popped a question in the MS newsgroup as well.

Thanks.

No luck. Reinstalled XP Pro, and reinstalled PS CS. Same error every time.

What’s this thing looking for? And I notice now Illustrator and Corel Painter are now giving me the same error too! Why. Can’t figure this out.

No. I thought that was a bit extreme given the fact that that XP had just been put on about an hour previous, updated through Windows Update and then the only thing applied to the system was PS, then Illus then Painter (in that order). No other S/W has been installed pending resolution. I did go back and "overlay" with a fresh install based on your resp #1.

I did find this however just a moment ago: <http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;142606>. It is a pretty close description though it talks about W2K (and we know that XP is built upon W2K’s core) and at the end hints at reporting the error to the software vendor (aka Adobe). Does that ref apply here to Win XP Pro? I tend to think it does. And I’m not sure Adobe will even listen to me, a single non-corporate schlep user. At this point this is the only answer I’ve been able to come up with for this error after hours of searching (thank God for broadband!)

So I’m still hoping for a solution. What’s people’s experience working with Adobe. Maybe you’re on their staff!!

Dave’s go it right. See here: <http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;195310>
Installing over ME doesn’t remove all it’s components I’ll bet. Sadly I’ll have to unload the whole set up and start, this time from real ground zero. I’ll know better next time…

Rats!

correct. sorry to say. the install screen in xp (and 2k for that matter) is misleading. it should state clearly that while you CAN upgrade over 9x/me, you should do a clean install to avoid this kind of problem. the good news is, once you get a clean xp install setup, you’ll find it’s pretty much the most stable os that microsloth has ever released.

good luck, dave
