If you have Windows ME installed on your system are you just out of luck or is there something you can do to make AP8 run? I know that I don’t have enough RAM on my system. Would that help?

You can’t run PS CS on WinME. End of story.

Yes, ME bites allright. After the umpteenth trip to Gateway – the computer was still under warranty – I upgraded to XP and haven’t had so much as one forced reboot. I never woulda believed the difference.

I still don’t understand how Gates & co got so rich riding on the back of such really bad software as 3.1, 95, 98 & ME.

XP almost makes up for it.

Because it was better than anything you or I wrote?

95 wasn’t quite ready for prime time, but it wasn’t as horrible as some people would lead you to believe. 98 was very serviceable; I used it until recently on a dual boot machine.

Based on my own experience, I would have to say many of the problems seen by users were either self-inflicted or caused by shoddy applications. An example of self-inflicted would be a cousin of mine who downloaded every free utility, screensaver, demo app and piece of freeware imaginable and then wondered why his computer was unstable. Shoddy software? Well, I once saw a graphics app with Corel’s name on it cause my computer to spit out more blue screens in two weeks than I has seen in the previous two years.

That brings us to ME. ME sux. Always has, always will.

Ho,
You are so right. ME was no improvement at all over previous versions of Windows. At least before ME , things got incrementally better.

Because it was all we had and we didn’t have much choice and for a lot of people (see people still want to run ME and 95) didn’t know better. It is sad. But, you are right XP almost makes up for all of the years of mistreatment we got from Microsoft.

Myself I have been running Windows XP since launch day without a single crash or reinstall. I think this is the longest I have had any OS run without a crash or reinstall and this goes for DOS as well.

Mac,

"Because it was better than anything you or I wrote?"

I think I was more implying that Apple had such good software in comparison (without actually mentioning that name to avoid another "mine’s better than your’s" thread developing).

Robert,

Me too – only 2 blue screens (and lovely navy-blue ones at that) with XP, both entirely self inflicted (3rd party Dodgey Bros. software) in all that time. As to my comment above – I ran a Mac llci for 5 years with only a couple of crashes in total. My first encounter with Windows (95) led to at least a couple of system crashes a week, if not a day, and 98 wasn’t much better. ME caused me to get XP, period.

I’ve used Macintosh through the years also (and still have an old Power PC).
Through the years, I’ve always been able to get the Toshes to hang about as frequently as the WinTel boxes.
Prolly a special knack of mine, though 🙂

Mac,

I guess I remeber a few more "hangs" with the Mac now you mention it, but it was Dozey that introduced me to to the electric blue screen with the indecipherable geek-speak messages ultimately instructing the use of ctrl+alt+del – which rarely worked – and then the hard-restart which never really worked properly, either, and usually led to much gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair (which I had, then) to get the thing running in a somewhat stable fashion.

The Mac restarted OK each time at least.

Memories.

I’m pleased that XP has removed this trauma from my life, but not really forgiving of all the wasted time and stress that was caused prior.

And there were many people who upgraded their new ME machines to 98-SE to get them to work. Luckily I waited that one out.

But extremely hard on your wallet…and who knows when steve will throw the hardware baby out with the OS bath water…says the former owner of a "beige" G3 that can’t move to OS X…

Rick,

No. One of ME’s problems is that you could have 2 GB of good Ram, but ME will only "see" 512.

ME, 98 and 98SE are designed to use 1GB of RAM. This according to MS.

You just need a

[vcache]
MaxFileCache=

statement in system.ini to keep the paging file from wasting the extra 512MB.

Mac,
Thanks for the ME system.ini info:
snip<[vcache]
MaxFileCache=

I had abandoned all hope and so went back to Win2ndED in order to better utilize the RAM available. Had not heard of the fix until now.

Try setting it for either 128, 256, or 512, and see which performs better overall.
Generally, the lower you set it, cached information (like programs restarting) can be slower, but the more free RAM available TO applications.

The figure is set in KB (1024), so:
MaxFileCache=131072 is 128MB
262144 is 256MB
524288 is 512MB

Should never be set over 512 and you don’t need to be running over 512MB RAM for the setting to give a performance boost. My box has 512 and I have cache set to 128MB. Some gamers find performance boosts when they set the cache REALLY low, like 32MB, but not recommended for general computing.

However, meant to mention, ME *is* flakey, worst thing MS ever produced.

Usually just fine until the first few bruises appear, then it’s destined to completely fail shorly after 😐
