If you only have one disk you will not be able to use a scratch disk.

Bullshit.

and in scratch disk i have only 1 startup??
what i am sopose to chosse in this option??

it’s really simple – photoshop only looks at RAM not used by the system. load PS and open the preferences dialog. you see it offers you LESS than 512? that’s because windows is already loaded. give it 100% just don’t try to do anything else whiles it’s running or you be disapointed in the speed things get done.

Leave it at 4 but see what’s wrong with your Shift key, I think it is stuck.

PS runs very well (it’s stable, not fast) even with one drive. I haven’t had problems with quite large files. (256Mb RAM and 40Gb HDD @ 7,200rpm.) The second drive is useful, but I had a 40Gb 5,400rpm drive that’d just slowed the system so I use it as a storage device at the moment.

If you only have one disk you will not be able to use a scratch disk. If you intend to use photoshop a lot upgrade to 1 gig of ram. I have two striped western digital raptor sata 36 gig 10,000 rpm disks as my boot volume & scratch disk and two striped 160 gig wester digital fluid bearing 8 mb cache 7,200 rpm disks for my storage volume.
I did have 2 gig of d-ddr 333 clocked to 366 but I get better performance in real conditions with 1 gig of d-ddr 400 running at 450.
