Ok…what am I doing wrong? Trying to do some rollover buttons in Photoshop so I’m only wanting to change the text color. Still have the file as psd, I’m on the "text" layer, (there are only 2, layer 1 which is the text and the background), and when I choose the "T" for the text tool, if I try to click to edit the type, it adds another layer and if I hold the mouse and drag, it will add a box of dotted lines and corner and middle points, and something comes up on the bottom about rotating. The layer this adds has the "T" exactly like the "T" button on the toolbar.

Grrrr…have I clicked something inadvertently? I’ve changed text color a million times, it’s not flattened, that was my first check, if I click on the layer that I "know" is the text, I can move it around with the arrow keys so that supported my "on the correct layer" question. Any guidance appreciated!!

You’re close.

Set your text layer as the active layer, click on the text tool, as you did before.

Move the cursor over one end of the text until it turns into an "i-beam" cursor, then click and drag to select the text whose color you want to change. Changing the text color will now modify your text. —

Hmmmm…isn’t my layer the "active" layer if it’s the one highlighted in the window section on the right where it shows layers? And if I’m able to move the text with the arrow keys, doesn’t that indicate it’s the "active" layer?

In the layers palette – if you double click on the "T" that indicates the layer is a text-layer, it will highlight all the text in that layer, and you can then change the color to your hearts delight… 🙂

Dave and Mike…I am blonde, could that be it??? 🙂

The layer that I "believe" is my text, and it does move the text if I use the arrow keys indicating to me that it "is" the layer I am on, doesn’t have a "T", it just says "layer 1". Could I have somehow made a text layer unchangeable? I thought I could only do this by flattening the layers but maybe I’ve done something I haven’t realized. I’m not an expert in Photoshop by ANY stretch of the imagination, a beginner whose been dabbling with it for several years.

Tomorrow, maybe I’ll just start from scratch again, as I’m making one long 760 pixels x 11 pixels bar with text and cutting it up, so I need to simply change the text color so my dimensions will be exact on both colors so I want to do this after I’ve cut it up. Could this be it? I’ve selected portions and pasted it into a new file BUT it’s still a PSD, I thought that made the layers still changeable. Just trying to understand.

I really, really appreciate your directions so far, and believe me…maybe it’s just me. 🙁

It sounds as though you have rasterized your text. To change color now you can click on the transparency icon in the Layers Palette to lock transparency then pick the color you want, and Alt-Delete (Option-Delete on Mac) to fill with the color.

Just because the file is not flattened doesn’t mean the text is editable as"live" text. If you merged with another layer for example you may have rasterized it.

Good point, but I usually see a prompt like…"do you really want to rasterize your text, it will be uneditable". It’s possible I hit the enter button if this prompt has a clickable "answer". I’m in the middle of trying…note…TRYING to lay vinyl floor, I’ll try that tonight!

Thanks much…to all three of you that have responded! Really appreciate it. I know I can recreate and work around, but I’d like to learn what I "inadvertently" did.
