I have looked over similar queries and none seem specific to me.

I am scanning lots of B&W photos into my computer and saving them as both .psd and jpegs with minimum compression (they need to be good quality) With most, there does not seem to be a problem, but with one or two I cannot reopen them and I am getting the above error message. I cannot re install XP as it came bundled with the PC (always believed it was a con) and I am not paying Bill Gates for it twice. Any suggestions gratefully received – the photos are my mum’s – damaged and very precious.

The error message has nothing to do with the operating system. Basically what it’s saying is that the file in question is corrupt or has a bit of data in someplace other than where Photoshop expects it.

So likely the file is toast. You can try opening the file in a different program. Corel Photopaint, for example, seems pretty adept at opening JPEGs that Photoshop says is corrupt. However, you have said that you save them both as PSDs and JPEGs, so why not just open up the PSD file and resave as the JPEG?

FWIW, the Windows XP install disk should have been included on it’s own CD or as part of the System Restore disk you received with your computer… Unless of course, you bought the program second hand, in which case the person who sold you the computer should have also at that time given you the installation and license for all software installed on the computer. If not, you have an illegal version of the operating system (and perhaps programs) on that computer and you should probably go out and buy a legal copy just to be safe or contact the person who sold you the computer and get those original program disks.

I have tried that & I have tried rescanning (even tried on different days after reboots etc.)- it still says those files are corrupt. It just seems bizarre that it opnly happens (repeatedly) with those same photos – all others are OK. I will try opening in a different package – or exporting to a different package as a tif or something and then saving as a jpeg and see what happens – i will let you know.

Ta for you help

Generally if *anything* will open them, IrfanView will.
