I was in the file browser dragging over pictures to a new file. When I went to check some/most were missing. I have since done a search and think I have found them but when I try to open them they say, "file not supported by this program." What happened? Need help ASAP Please

Amy,

I was in the file browser dragging over pictures to a new file.

All due respect, but that doesn’t make sense. Were you dragging them into a new folder? If so, that’d be where I’d look for them – you’re moving them.

If that’s not what you meant, help us understand a little more clearly what happened.

If you think you have located them, how are you trying to open them? Are they Photoshop files (PSD)? Are you using the file browser to locate them?

Peace,
Tony

Tony,

If you check this message. Yes this was in the file browser of Photoshop CS. I was dragging the picture into a new folder. Some how they changed from my jpeg pictures into some sort of format I am not recognizing, nor is my computer. To make matters more strange some of the photos did make it into the intended file and can be opened but the others got sent to some new folder that I have located and can not open.

If you have any thoughts on this please help. Very confussed and frustrated. This never happened in Photoshop 7. I am a photographer and handle many files in Photoshop before.

Amy,

Impossible. Don’t take offense, here’s what’s happening. You are drawing incorrect conclusions from what you observe. That’s what makes troubleshooting difficult. Not to worry though, let’s go through it.

First, what’s the status right now? Are you looking for images that you had on your computer, but they are no longer there?

Did you happen to use the Browser Batch Rename function (right clicking on files)?

If you didn’t rename them using the browser, they’re still there unless you moved them to the recylce bin or deleted them. It sounds like you performed a drag-n-drop onto a new folder. What’s in that folder?

If you know one file name that you cannot now find, do a search on your computer (Using Find) for that filename. You don’t say if you are in XP or something else, but the process is functionally the same.

Again, unless you deleted them they are there.

For the files that have been "converted", what is the three character extension on the end of the file name? Is it JPG?

Let’s start there.

Peace,
Tony
