Earlier, when I had to reinstall Photoshop on my PC after problems, the upgrade CD process asked to insert an earlier version. While I had the 4.0 version on my PC, I no longer possesed the CD. I called Adobe, they verified that I had the s/w on my PC and gave me a ‘crack key’ and instructions on how to get around the question. All was well.

Last month I upgraded my PC by removing Win ME and installing Win XP. This required reinstalling all of my apps. While installing Photoshop 6.0 and Acrobat 5.0 I came across the same problem. I tried to reuse the ‘crack key’ but it will not work.

I still have the 6.0 software ‘on the drive’ but it will not work, probably because the registry doesn’t have the necessary data. I have search around but have had no luck. Adobe will not help this time because the product is no longer supported. Not only do I not have the cash to buy the new CS but even if I did, I’d still have the same problem.

I regret that I lost (or tossed) my 4.0 original but I can’t afford to buy the full version of CS. Can anyone help?

Thanks, Mike —

How to install Photoshop CS on a new Windows PC?
Hello. I just got a new Dell P4 running Windows XP Home. I had Photoshop 7 and CS on my old Dimension 8200. When I attempted to install CS on my new machine, the setup asked (searched) for a prior version, which of course, is not there. QUESTION: Must I install a prior verison of Photoshop simply to install CS?? It seems like that would be a giant waste of disk space, since I plan to use only CS.
Thanks in advance for any help on this!

No, you don’t. You’ll be asked for a prior version for verification and at that point you can simply remove the CS installation CD and replace it with the 7.0 CD. Once verified you swap them again and continue with the install.
