Periodically, when attempting to close the program, I get "Program Not Responding" in the header bar. After that, even Windows Task Manager seems unable to close the program. When it is able to shut it down, it is normally after several attempts have failed. I have also noticed that when this freeze occurs, the task manager is showing two sessions open. This, even though only one session was ever started.

In my Task Manager not oly the program in question is shown, but the attempt to shut that down is there also, as a separate task.
Maybe you’re looking at that?

Sometimes, you simply have to use the HW reset button, if you have one.

I’ve run into the problem of a seeming inability to shut down Photoshop also. I discovered through trial and error that sometimes when Photoshop has heavily burdened my system with paging files in excess of my 1 GB of Ram…as now it is 1.37 GB in size…it takes a very long time to shut down…and NOT because it is locked up, but simply because it is clearing out the paging files from cumbersome, slow hard disk drives instead of fast DDR RAM.

During those times, after a period of 3 to 10 minutes, it will close.

I’ll ask you for the sake of clarity to completely ignore your "Program Not Responding" notification, because it is in error…often. I’ve suffered a lot and have learned the hard way too often. If I achieve anything today, let it be that I’ve helped someone else in some small way.

Oh yes, if you keep using Windows Task Manager to kill a program that appears to be not responding, but which actually is responding albeit stodgidly, you take the real chance of Photoshop "forgetting" all it’s presets settings and recent history.

Nuff said…Good luck!
