I’m using Photoshop 7.0.1, on WinXP.

I’m having trouble saving an extremely large image to JPG format. The image was derived from a PDF that was opened as a 57in x 32in, 200dpi grayscale image in Photoshop, in order to convert it to an image file. I I’m able to create a TIF, but when I try to make a JPG I get an error message "Cannot Save a Copy As…Because of program error." The quality JPG I chose, was 9 (high).

I’ve also tried creating the JPG from the TIF file (instead of the imported PDF), and that doesn’t work either. Any suggestions?

Why are you trying to get an image that size into JPG format (which I believe is larger than JPG will allow). If it’s for printing, DON’T use JPG – it uses lossy compression. You’re better off with a tiff. If it’s for display on a monitor or the web, that’s just too huge.

JPEG format does allow it as I have worked with JPEGs that size in the past. I do not know why Michele can;t save the file and she does not mention if smaller JPEG save OK or not.

BTW, Michele, have you tried LZW TIFF compression?

I am aware that JPG uses lossy compression, but I’m not really concerned about that. We will be doing the printing in house on our plotter and for some reason it has troubles printing TIF files (especially with LZW compression), not to mention that it will take forever to spool…

At first, they only requested that the final print size be 11×17, so when I had trouble making a JPG from the full size PDF that I had opened in Photoshop, I simply imported the PDF again and reduced the dimensions in the "Rasterize Generic PDF Format" dialog box that pops up when you open a PDF. It worked fine then, but now they want the image full size and I can’t make a JPG.

A colleague suggested that the problem may lie in the color mode, which was grayscale, but I’ve tried making a JPG in both grayscale and RGB and the same thing happens…I guess maybe Troy is right.

Does you plotter not come with a PostScript RIP?

If yes and if it is a level 3 RIP, you can simply download the PDF to it and voila!

If no, time to talk to your boss about making some purchases…
