Need recommendation for large shadow mask CRT

My Nokia 445xPro has some drift in the red channel. Having paid to have it fixed once (under warranty but expensive shipping as you could imagine), I’d like to upgrade. Most high end monitors are trinitron (aperture mask), but I can’t stand the two support lines on the screen. So who makes a good 21 or 22 inch shadow mask CRT with a flat screen.
[Or as flat as my old Nokia.) I use 1600×1200 @85Hz, so that would be
the target.

Any comments on the following?

This looks like a no-brainer unless I missed a model since the Samsung has nearly a third more bandwidth.

This looks like a no-brainer unless I missed a model since the Samsung has nearly a third more bandwidth.

If you’re looking for a perfect image (and from your comment about aperture grill wires, you probably are), you’ll likely be disappointed with either of those CRTs. The best shadow mask monitor was made by Eizo (the F980), but unfortunately they’ve discontinued it along with all their other CRT models. Still, if you can find an F980 with not much use on it, that’s the way to go.

Before writing off aperture grill monitors entirely you should take a look at Mitsubishi’s 2070. It has a brighter screen and better color gamut than either the Viewsonic or Samsung.

Thanks. No luck on ebay for the Eizo, but I’ll look around. Are there aperture grill tubes without those damn horizontal lines?

Maybe I’m better off having the 445xPro tweaked. I suspect it can be made better by a good tech, but when something has drift, you really need to replace major assemblies or spend hours spraying components with Mr. Chill. I can’t see this costing less than a new monitor.

No, not on large monitors. I hated them at first, too. But within a few weeks I didn’t even notice them any more.

You won’t know for sure until you get a quote. Some places offer a flat fee (typically $50 excluding parts) for monitor repairs. Look around.
