taming the Navigator zoom slider

The zoom slider in the Navigator window is very difficult to control. The *slightest* mouse movement causes image size to jump by 20% or more. I know I can type a value in the input field and it would be nice if it would respond to mouse-wheel adjustments, but it doesn’t: the value changes, but the image preview doesn’t.

Is there a keyboard option (alt/ctrl/?) that makes this control easier to use? I can’t find one.

I usually double-click the Hand Tool to fill the screen, then to increase in even increments type cntrl-spacebar-left click, to decrease type alt-space-left click. The advantage of this is it’s easy to get to 25 and 50%, which shows the file much cleaner than odd %’s due to the way the interpolation is done. I’m sure there are other ways …
