I have a 4 gig ram dual processor Dell workstation. Adobe PS CS states that only 1770 mb are available to PS even though nothing else is running ( though at least 3.5 gigs is actually available). I get frequent insufficient ram readings as well, on files that ran easily on Adobe 7. My memory passed all the memory diagnostic tests from Dell.
Any solutions? Suggestions? Thanks.

Windows XP divides the 4gb total vitual memory available to any program into a 2gb area for the program and a 2gb area for mapping of the operating system.

There is nothing that you can do to change this.

As for the insufficient ram, perhaps the message really means that the scratch space is not big enough.

If my memory serves me…about 3.8 gigs should be available on your machine, but only 2 gigs are available for PS. Some of the that 2 gigs is reserved for the executable, the rest can be used as ram. The 1770 mb number sounds right, if the memory setting in PS preferences is set to 100%. Try reducing the memory setting to 75%, lower if you’re into plugins, and maybe the ram warnings will subside.
