Hi,

Is there any software that can do color raster to color vector conversion? I’ve searched on google for a while and I can only find software that converts to black lines.

What I’m after is something that could convert an image that has been simplified with the ‘cut-out’ filter to vector polygons.

Does a vector format exist that can support this kind of image?

Cheers

Tim

Most of the autotrace tools that come with illustration programs like CorelDraw and FreeHand can be set to detect a given number of colours other than black and white. I’m most familar with FreeHand’s, which also gives the choice of creating lines or filled shapes. I haven’t tried any stand-alone tracing software since an Adobe Streamline of the late ’90s — which IIRC had such capabilities as well.

The result of tracing an image with any of these programs will be a native illustration file of some kind, which can then be exported as an ordinary vector EPSF, PDF, or whatever.

Of course. The process is called vectorizing.

Signmaking software – the vynil cutting kind needs to do this. There is loads of stuff out there, nothing fully-automatic you understand, some artistic input is required for good results, but these all handle color:

Some free, some not.

I think most/all vector formats can handle color images consisting of filled polygons.

Macromedia’s Flash authoring tool also has a feature that can vectorize automatically – you tell it the detail level and off it goes. But I doubt you can export the result into a vector file (the point is to then use it in a flash movie).

Streamline 4.0 can do it easily.
