What’s the deal with the behavior of the spacebar in CS?

Pressing the spacebar used to call up the hand tool when the Levels dialog box was open.

Now pressing the spacebar OKs the dialog box.

Jerry,

This sounds like a window focus issue where the system interprets the space bar as a click on the OK button. – I’ve coded that bug a dozen times.

Try clicking on the image window before pressing the space bar and see if the hand tool works then.

If that fixes it, I’d suggest adding your bug to the list – it may earn you a T-shirt!

Jerry,

At a guess I would say its an oversight, but until Scott or Chris respond it will remain a guess.

It is ‘normal behaviour’ for the space bar to be an alternative to the return key in d/boxes (not just in Photoshop) and requires additional code to prevent it from being so.

Hi Len,

Well, at least I figured out how to access the hand tool with a dialog box open…

You have to hit the spacebar and the H key at the same time now.

Thanks,

Jerry

Thanks for coming back with that – something I’ve learned today…

Hit Alt-C to focus on the Channels popup, then the spacebar will behave normally. Default focus in a couple of dialogs was changed to the OK button (as per Microsoft’s logo spec), and when a button has focus, the spacebar "presses" it (keyboard only navigation).

As long as focus is in a combo box or edit field, the spacebar will behave as it should.
