I am scanning B&W photos into Photoshop 7.0 using a HP 4670 scanner (Windows XP Home). After some minor adjustments (crop, levels), I find that my only format options (Save as) are .PSD, .Tiff & Raw. I can convert to JPEG in another program but this is a pain. I have never had this problem before. The scanner output is saved as greyscale.
Any suggestions?

Do you have layers?

You have to flatten to save as Jpeg.

BTW Jpeg is a lossy format. It degrades your image

Why do you need Jpeg?

Also, for B&W you should be in grayscsle mode, not RGB. That is unless you want sepias or something like that.

Don, are you trying to say that you can’t save a grayscale as a Jpeg???

You don’t have to flatten first. Jpegs dfon’t support layers so Photoshop automatically flattens while saving.

Sorry I have v5… that’s the way it used to work.

So what would limit the number of file formats in the "save as" dialog in v7 to PSD TIF and RAW?

Courtney,
They’re probably 16 bit images . If you convert to 8 bit you can save as JPG ( not a good idea , in general, because of the lossy compression ).

Yup that’s it. 16 bit.

I would keep them as 16 bit psd or tiffs if I was you.

Convert to 8 bit only if you need to place in a layout.
