PS 7.0.1 will not start on Windows 2000 system.

I have search this forum and Google and have found quite a few people with this same problem. So far I have seen no solution.

PS 7.0.1 and Image Ready 7.0.1 when started shows initializing and then show error message "Could not complete your request because of missing or invalid personalization information."

I can not get to the preferences during load.
I have searched and their is no *.psp file on my computer. After I reinstall their is still no *.psp file.
All other programs work fine including adobe acrobat.

These two programs worked fine yesterday.
I have Windows 2000 Pro with all available updates.

Any help would be appreciated.

first run a chkdsk (disk repair) on your system. then reinstall photoshop. should clear it right up.

Thanks for the responce.

chkdsk revealed no problems.

The proper ser.# is in the registry.

I will try reinstalling Windows 2000.

reinstalling photoshop is usually the fix for this error, but if you wish to reinstall windows, feel free.

Thanks but I have already reinstalled photoshop twice.

As I stated in my original post, I can not get to the preferences during startup.

Be quicker on the draw…it can be done!

I searched and their is no .psp file, even after I reinstalled Photoshop.

Make sure Windows is set to see all files, system/hidden included. Make sure you are in as admin if W2K or XP.
Note that XP file search is buggy.

When you reinstalled PS did it do so without "muttering"? Were you given the opportunity to fill in the serial?
Did you migrate PS related things from one pc to an other? Deleting the prefs is easy: search *.psp files and you should see the one belonging to PS. (it is something like preferences.psp).
You don’t have to be able to run PS in order to do that. Do you ever have "msi" errors? That’s the Microsoft Installer service.

Thanks for everyones responce.

The faq is the first thing I tried.

I did the ctrl-alt–shift during startup, It did not work. It went straight to the error message and closed.

I searched for the photoshop preferences psp file, found and deleted.

Photoshop would not rewrite psp even after four installs. The registry has the correct ser. # for photoshop.

Windows 2000 no longer sees photoshop as a program in the control panel.

ps doesn’t write the prefs file on install, it writes it on first run.

I may be wrong, but I believe the prefs file isn’t written until the application is closed.

not sure exactly when in the first run, but definately not during the install. you may be right.

To All,

I have recently installed and run Fix-it utilities 5 which has found and corrected the problem.

It is not with adobe but with Windows.

Adobe dose not have a clean uninstall program of their own but windows just compounds the problem.

I found multiple conflicting registery entries on Adobe PhotoShop 7.0.1 and installation of Adobe Acrobat 9.0 caused A freeze in all Adobe applications.
Only when I completely deleted Photoshop, and Acrobat, and ran V-Com fix-it5 then reinstalled PhotoShop did I have full use of PhotoShop.

I conclude that this is not A problem with PhotoShop but with the registery of Windows.

Maybe noone will have this same problem.

Maybe some one will.
