I got a mesage that says something like "Unable to start Photoshop 7.0 due to insufficient RAM"…I have about 256MB so why won’t it start? I can’t access anything in Photoshop. Help will be GREATLY appreciated. I’m using a P4 and OS is XP Professional 256RAM

You may not have enough hard disk space as PS also uses a "scratch disk" – essentially a swap file.

Try defragging your hard disk first.

Richard,

It may well be that what you’re seeing reported is exactly the problem. While WinXP is said to work with a minimum of 64MB RAM, 128MB is the recommended minimum. And, if I remember correctly for PS7, 128MB was likewise the recommended minimum RAM there; that may have a "if open concurrent with Image Ready" caveat though.

When installed, the default RAM allocation for Photoshop to use is 50%. So, being conservative, let’s assume 64MB for WinXP, 96MB for Photoshop, and 128MB for the allocated RAM…Boom! You’re over the 256MB actual installed RAM. And we’ve not even factored in other miscellaneous background tasks, virus scanners, etc., that also eat up RAM resources.

I’d strongly suggest a minimum of 512MB RAM for your system and better still, 1GB.

Regards,

Daryl

Richard,

That could mean your C:\ drive is getting very tight on free space, more likely if you have Photoshop preferences set to use the C:\ as its scratch drive.

You could also try deleting your preference file – Details in the FAQ at the top of this forum’s Topic List

NO! Check your hard drive space before you run out to by ram!!! Check windows swap file. Make sure it’s set to let windows manage instead of a fixed size.

You MAY still need ram, but often when photoshop says it’s "out of ram" it really means it has nowhere to put it’s scratch file!
