When I capture a digital still from a digital sports video, there is a great deal of pixellation, especially along the edges of an individual. How can I smooth these pixellated edges into a smooth linear edge so that it looks good even when enlarged.

The problems along edges are probably artifacts from compression. In the jpeg format you will see artifacts at "low quality" settings. The artifacts are difficult to impossible to fix which is why jpeg is referred to as a lossy compression.

What is the file type and pixel dimensions of the image file in question? Do you have some web space to post it on?

I’m not exactly sure what the original resolution of the capture is. I think the video camera captures stills at about 1.4 or 1.5 MP. I save the picture in Photoshop as a 200ppi bmp file. I don’t have a personal web page, but would be happy to e-mail you one of the pics to look at. I suspect that the problem is probably coming as a result of a low capture resolution. Thanks for your help! I appreciate it!

Resolution and compression are 2 separate issues:

<http://www.faqs.org/faqs/jpeg-faq/part1/>

From the above link:

JPEG has a hard time with very sharp edges: a row of pure-black pixels adjacent to a row of pure-white pixels, for example. Sharp edges tend to come out blurred unless you use a very high quality setting.

What zoom factor are you seeing this problem at?

Much more than 200% will show pixelization no matter how high or low the resolution of the file.

You should view @ 100%.

Having enough pixels to print at any given size is another issue altogether and a very deep subject.

To echo John Slate, there are two factors here that will determine printing quality:
1. actual pixel size of the video frames
2. level of JPEG compression applied at the time of creation (I’m assuming it’s creating JPEGs?

As far as 1., obviously you want the maximum size you can get, and assume that’s being done?
As for 2, is it indeed outputting JPEGs? If so, is there any control of compression setting? Or even better, can it output in TIFF or BMP or TARGA?

If you want to email me a pic, I’ll take a look and/or put it off my site for others to comment on.
