Hi,

Does anyone here know if the NEF format is different between the Nikon D70 and D70s.

I have installed ACR 2.4 in PS CS but when I try to open a D70s file I get the following error message:

"Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document"

I can open the files if I use Nikons plugin.

Alternatively, does anyone have a NEF file from a D70 (not D70s) that they could send me so I can try it.

It took me a couple of hours searching but I finally found a D70 NEF file on the net.

The D70 file is different to the D70s. I guess it’s back to the Nikon plugin until I can upgrade to CS2.

Mike,

A friend had the same problem with his 70s and NEFs. He had installed the Nikon software, which basically over wrote the Camera RAW plug-in in PS. Now, he was on CS2, but the latest PS plug-in from Adobe should work with CS. Check Google.Groups (this NG) for the exact location of two (2) Nikon NEF plug-ins (that is 2, not 1, so find and disable, re-name, or delete both). Install the latest CS RAW converter, and all should be right. He had gone so far as to re -install CS2, and even re-format his HDD, with a complete re-insatll of everything. Unfortunately, he kept re-installing his Nikon software, so he had the same issue. I don’t have the v#’s of the latest, but go to www.adobe.com and look for the newest one, just remember to find and address both RAW converter files from the Nikon software.

Version 2.4 is the last one that will work with CS. My main issue is that Nikons plugin looses the EXIF data when importing to Photoshop.

It looks like I am going to have to load the NEFs into the Nikon View editor, and save an a TIFF. The load the TIFF into PS.

It is only trivially different, but because it is for a different camera, ACR 2.4 doesn’t know that. So it can’t access it.

Convert these D70s NEFs to DNG using the free 3.1 DNG Converter, then you can access them in ACR 2.4. You don’t need to upgrade to CS2 if you don’t want to.
http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/main.html

The 3.1 DNG Converter knows what ACR 2.4 doesn’t know, and puts enough into the DNG file for ACR 2.4 to show the thumbnails & convert them.

This is a proven route. (Even though D70s is not in the list of cameras that can be handled by the 3.1 DNG Converter).

Correct – you need a newer version of the ACR plugin to open the new files. Unfortunately that means upgrading to Photoshop CS2, or using the DNG converter to convert the D70s files to DNG, then opening them in CS.
