I’m currently using Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition (with the "East Asian languages" installed), running English version of Creative Suite, with Asian Text options turned on. I am told by reviews and tutorials that Illustrator CS now use the same typographic engine of InDesign CS, but I have serious doubt of that.

In Illustrator CS, font names in Asian languages (in my case, Chinese) are displayed correctly in the Type palletes, but it displays "garbage codes" in text frames; whereas in InDesign, font names are displayed in ASCII (not Unicode Chinese, but the ASCII characters that make up each Chinese character), even though in text frames the correct fonts are used.

Either case presents problems to me, in Illustrator CS, I cannot use the Chinese fonts at all, whereas in InDesign, I cannot tell exactly which Chinese font I’m using!

In Photoshop CS, some Chinese fonts are handled correctly in both the Type Toolbox and the Text layers, but most are just like in Illustrator, where Chinese font names are displayed in the Toolbox, but garbage codes in the text frames.

Please help!

I don’t know about Win2003, but in WinXP you have to switch to an appropriate locale. This is done via the "Advanced" tab in "Regional and Language Options". Also, you can’t use more than one locale at a time. You gotta love Gates.
