Before I begin, please allow me this:
I know already I should be upgrading to a higher PS version (not an option right now).
I know I will buy myself a Card Reader, but on the road, the less I have to carry with me the better
…..THUS,

I’ve got the Canon PowerShot S50, and have the corresponding software installed on my desktop and my laptop — as well as PhotoShop 5.0 and Windows Home XP.

When downloading images from my camera using PhotoShop I’m driven crazy by each file transfer coming to the forefront. Ergo, I can’t get any other work done.

On one machine it works just fine in the background, but not on my Laptop which I use on the road.

Any ideas as to what settings if any need to be changed or adjusted in Windows? or in PhotoShop?

Suggestions are welcomed and appreciated. 🙂

Don’t use Photoshop to download! use the inbuilt Windows XP download facility (if it is a USB connection – Windows will automatically detect it) Are your pictures in jpg format? if so have you reset file association to PS instead of WXP?

Wow! Using your method I went into Advanced Settings and simply copied over all my photos.
Afterwards I guess I’ll use Ifranview to do a batch conversion.

Thanks a million Harry! This is super!

My XP seems to have lost this, it used to work but doesen’t show now. Any idea how to ‘get it back’ or what it’s called or where it is?

It’s in your Control Panel under START / Settings

It should be under Scanners and Cameras there.

Worse comes to worse, do a search for "Camera" under Windows Help

Taken from the windows help file – there is more on the subject!

To get pictures from a scanner or digital camera
Plug your camera or scanner into your computer.
If your camera is Plug and Play, the Scanner and Camera Wizard starts. -or-

If your camera is not Plug and Play or you are using a scanner, right-click the camera or scanner from which you want to get pictures, and then click the appropriate option for that device.

Follow the instructions on your screen.
Notes

To open Scanners and Cameras, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Scanners and Cameras.
To work directly from your camera, click advanced users only on the first page of the Scanner and Camera Wizard.
To obtain pictures, the scanner or camera must first be installed, turned on, and connected to your computer.
To preview an image after you download it, double-click it to open it in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Strange but The only thing in Cameras and Scanners is the scanner. tried runing the add new imaging device but no joy, tried reinstalling the driver but still cannot find or bring up the XP program. It doesn’t really matter I can continue using explorer or the camera software. Thanks for the responses

FYI
If you plug the card reader or camera and the wizard doesn’t come up:

go to MY COMPUTER, right click on the drive with the Compact flash card, choose AUTOPLAY, a box with the choice to copy the files (fastest) or to use the wizard will pop up (more organizing choices and you can rotate before uploading)

(this is so simple it stunned me cause I had the problem before and kept thinking my XP was broken, I kept refreshing my USB ports, all kind of nonsense)

the wizard takes a while to run but allows you to name the files and correct the orientation
on location where battery power may be an issue the fastest is just drag the files from the card "drive" to a folder

happy to pass it on…I thought the XP HOME version didn’t have the wizard, as I could never get it to come on on the laptop.
I was flabbergasted to find such simple method of bringing it up
