When I ‘Save As’ and provide a filename, Photoshop will often report it can’t save because the file is already in use. But there’s no such file, because I haven’t saved it yet! I have to quit Photoshop and restart it, then ‘Save As’ again. What’s up with that?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

psicon.dll is conflicting with windows explorer to lock the file. if you search for and rename the dll to something like psicon.old then restart your system the probelem will go away, but so will your ability to see your images as the icons for ps files in explorer’s "large icon" view. your call as to what’s more valuable to you. i’ve only seen the lock problem myself once, so i never bothered, but many people had the problem all the time and this fixed it.

the problem is more easily reproducible when loading a file from a CD, then removing the CD before doing the save-as. I get the aforementioned error every time under these circumstances, so I always have to remember to save the image before removing the CD.

Oddly enough, you can’t just ‘select-all’ ‘copy’ ‘new’ ‘paste’. Somehow, PS still thinks the file is already open.

I haven’t tested this on PS CS yet.

Gregg,

FWIW, I’ve always found that when Photoshop kicks back this particular error the only format that WILL save is a PSD. So I save it as a PSD (instead of a layered TIFF as I normally do), close Photoshop, relaunch Photoshop and open the file. I can then save as any format I choose.
