Hello.

What is the best way to insert a new background into a picture when the foreground is pretty complicated. I have tried to just blend images but this method is a lot of work since there are so many edges in the foreground.

Thanks in advance.

You have to actually remove the background, which is not an easy task usually. There are several tutorials on the web for it though. Google "cut out background" and "remove background" etc.

If you could upload the image to a web site and then post the URL to the list we might be able to help more. Also lookup "Layer Masks" such as http://www.janetoneil.com/photoshop/photo4page4.htm

If you can select the current background cleanly it’s simple to do this but if there are a lot of subtle transitions and gradations between current background and foreground it’s hard to get the selection ‘just right’. So it basically comes down to making a good selection …

At any rate, if you can select the current background do Select -> Inverse to select everything but the background, and then do cntrl-j which puts this on a new separate layer with transparency where the background used to be. Now you can move this layer anywhere you wish, to any background on any image. This part is easy, the hard part is often getting the precise selection in the first place, I feel.

Didn’t sound like Fred’s problem was going to be so simple, but for the above sometimes Color Range/Quick Mask can help with the selection.
