Actually, you’ve always been able to use Photoshop create images that would have transparent backgrounds in other apps like Quark or PageMaker. It’s just that the methods for doing this have become more plentiful in recent years.
It used to be that you had to create a clipping path in Photoshop and save as an EPS file, (and later as a TIFF file). Then the ability to use an alpha channel to define clipping areas came about (EPS and TIFF). Now programs like InDesign can handle your native Photoshop (or TIFF) file and retain all transparency information.
The ways for doing this have been around for a while, it’s just a matter of knowing which program can utilize which method.
Marie,
Nothing to do with Photoshop, it depends upon the RECEIVING application. InDesign will accept transparent b/g PSD’s as will Illustrator (ver. 9 onwards), But PageMaker only recognizes clipping paths in TIFFs and EPS files.
Very dissappointing that pagemaker can’t keep up with photoshops ability to export images.
If they gave Pagemaker the same functionality as ID, why have ID?
Adobe has ended development of Pagemaker, though a dot release is still possible.
ID picks up where it leaves off including the ability to handle transparency.
