Extensis Phototools and PS CS

I’ve owned PS CS for quite some time now, and every time I install it, I wind up uninstalling it within the hour. And it all comes down to Extensis Phototools. Over the years, I’ve become very dependent on them. I’m proficient with several of the filters, and I incorporate them into many of my website designs, especially font decoration.

So I’ve got several dozen websites that have title and button graphics that are created with Photobevel, Photoglow, Photogroove, etc. I’ve got information saved in the PSD files telling me how to duplicate an effect with Phototools so that it matches the rest of the site.

From everything that I’ve seen, there is virtually nothing that I can do to get Phototools running with PS CS. I’ve seen old web pages talking about a mythical version 3.0.6 which doesn’t exist anywhere these days.

Does anyone know if there is any hope for me? Will I ever be able to get Phototools running on CS, or am I trapped in 5.5 forever?

If worse came to worse and I had to abandon Phototools, is there anything similar on the market that is still being supported? Also, I’d like to have something like Photobars, too.

It might not help you, but I just tried Phototools in CS2, and they worked from the Filter menu, though would not launch from the Phototools’ Tool Bar – got Error 304. I don’t have them setup any longer in CS, and cannot recall ever running them from it. I just deleted the Phototools’ Tool Bar, and everything worked properly, PhotoEmboss, PhotoBevel, and PhotoGlow. You must have a more recent Extenis suite, as I do not have PhotoGroove.

PS, I just migrated these from earlier PS installations, and did not do a complete "install" from the Phototools’ CD.

Why not use the Bevel and Glow Layer Styles that exist in Photoshop? I remember Phototools from ancient times and IMHO it’s obsolete.

What about those superb icons Jazzdiver used ti sell which were based on Phototools? Will they still work in PSCS? I’m totally dependent on them and the lack of these icons is one reason I haven’t upgraded from PS7.

Why don’t Adobe add customizable icons of their own? Is it that expensive or is it just too much troble for the poor dears to worry about?

I’m not looking for just any old glow or bevel effect.

I have a lot of websites that have custom graphic buttons and page titles that I’ve created with Phototools filters. For each button and title, I have the original PSD file with notes describing how I created the effect. So four years down the road, if a customer comes back to me and says they want to add a "Testimonials" page, I don’t have to spend an hour figuring out how I created such-and-such effect.

I have Extensis Photo Edges and it won’t install under CS because ADOBE spell there exe file Photoshop.exe. My version of Extensis looks for an older version of Photoshop, (old versions from about ver 6 it think, spelt it Photoshp.exe ) Simple fix, i made a copy of the Photoshop.exe file and renamed it Photoshp.exe , now extensis installs and works like a breeze.

I use Phototools 3.06 which was later updated (but the build was still called 3.06) which allows photobars to work perfectly in CS but NOT in CS"

Yes, I figured that the second CS, should read CS2. Actually, my Extensis PTs and toolbar, worked fine in CS(1). The program worked from the Filters menu, just not from the PT Tool Bar in CS2 – no real biggie, and I just deleted the Tool Bar. Though much of the PT’s effects can easily be done with the Filters in CS2, I, too, like the interface from Extensis and have used them often.

Thanks for the URL, even though it won’t help me (on CS2), I’m sure some others will benefit from it.
