I’m tying to make the face of my daughter on to a medallion looking like it’ s there in relief. Like on a coin. Does anybody know a good tutorial for that?

Thnx Vincent

Try:

stylise
emboss
and see if you like it.

I already tried the emboss, but what I’m looking for is the way it looks on a coin.

So how do I make the face look metal, without loosing the contours of the face? And how do I make the relief in the face?

After embossing, try to assign the layer Overlay blending and put the coin image below the layer.

If it’s a colour photo you may have to desaturate it to get rid of the colour casts

Thanks for the replies. I managed to get quite far, but the result was so corny that I’m reconsidering my idea. But it’s always nice to learn a new technique.

Vincent,
The Photoshop plug-in filters KPT 5 Shapeshifter and KPT 6 Materializer would be a good start for doing such a project. Although I don’t have anything approximating the coin you speak of, I do have some metallic images using the filters with a metallic environment imported and masks to create the relief. The main thing to rememember is that the mask serves as a greyscale height map where the lighter the tone, the higher the elevation (or relief) and the darker the tone, the lower the elevation (or depression):

Here are some examples:

And a figure study:

Hope this helps.
