I’m an old-fashioned newspaper cartoonist and I have recently started colouring in my scanned cartoons with the Magic Wand in Photoshop 7.0. Can anyone advise if it is possible to add the same colour ro more than one area at one time? I could have maybe 15-20 little areas to fill with a gradient and it’s really slow doing each one separately.
Many thanks F.K.

Shift+click on different colours to add them to your selection. Beter than that would be to play with selective colour. In one go you can target several colours, adjust the sensitivity to those colours (all greens, or just light greens) and change the hue values without changing shades. I used it to see how my motorcyle would look in different colours. Red won.

Shift+click on different colours to add them to your selection

Or, look in the options bar with the magic wand tool selected. Towards the left, there are buttons that allow you to add or subract to your current selection, without using the modifier keys (shift, etc.), although like Scott, I prefer the modifiers.

Peace,
Tony

Thanks guys. For the moment I just want to fill say, 10 areas with yellow at the same time, without having to select one area, fill, select again, fill…..and so on. What’s the best way to do that please?

Do the shift click thing.

Do your scans have color in them, or are they black /white artwork?

I was going to say that if they’re colored, you may want to look at the select>color range to make your selections.

shift click, as the others have said.
use the magic wand to select the 1st area.
hold shift and click again (with the magic wand) to select more areas.

each click while holding shift will add to a selection (holding alt while clicking subtracts from a selection).

don’t forget the other selection tools (lasso marquee for example) for fine tuning. same shift and alt modifiers apply (for add or subtract from current selection).

another is using the quick mask and brush, if you’re comfortable with that. i set my defaults for quick mask to "paint on" selections (adjustable by double clicking the quick mask icon in the toolbar). that way i can use black to add to a selection, and paint with white to subrtact from a selection. I often use quick mask to clean up after selections with one or more of the other tools.

Thanks very much guys, you’ve been extremely helpful. I draw my cartoons in black ink,no filling or shading, scan them into Photoshop and colour all areas with Magic Wand. You can see some here if you wish: <http://homepage.eircom.net/~athenryart/cartoons.htm>

Francis,

If all the other areas have the same color you can deselect the Contiguous box.
