What would be the easiest way to get an image perfectly centered on a canvas? The image width is like 10 inches and the canvas width is 19 inches. The image height is 8 in. and the canvus height is 13 in.

Thank you!

The easiest way is to drag some guides to 4.5in and 2.5in and use the "snap to" feature. Should be perfect.

Here’s another way (Gary took the other):

Select All (Ctrl + A)

Copy the image to the clipboard (Ctrl + C)

Create a new document (Ctrl + N) – Leave all the settings and dimensions as-is. These will automatically be the dimensions of your image.

Paste your image into the new document (Ctrl + V)

In this new document, go to Image>Canvas Size and enter in the new dimensions of your canvas. Make sure that your anchor point is the center square (it will be by default). Click OK.

Voila! A centered image. You could set up an action to make this a one-click solution.

Easier than that is…

Be on the layer you want centered. Select|All. Click on the move tool. Look at the options bar up top. Bingo.

Q: But what will the selection align to?
A: The canvas.

That’s not necessarily what the poster was asking for, but that is a quick way to align to the canvas.

To find the center of your document quickly, choose Select > All, then enter free transform mode (Ctrl+T/Command+T). A crosshair will appear at the center point. If you drag out a pair of guides, they will snap to this point. Hit Esc to exit free transform mode. Try creating an action for this, then assinging this action to a shortcut key for quick centering.

Scott,

True, but what he said was:

What would be the easiest way to get an image perfectly centered on a canvas?

So… <shrug>

And fwiw, the alignmet buttons at the top will align to selection. So it’s just as easy to control click on a layer and then do the same thing, if you want to align one object relative to another. But in this case, as *I* interpret the question, he was asking to align to the canvas.

Ooh, that’s nice.

My 2 tips would be:

1. Link the layer to the background and use the alignment vertical/horizontal buttons as suggested. The background gives an unmovable anchor point. But I’m sure I’ve linked to a non-background layer with success too.

2. Easier: Shift+drag the layer into the document.

Well, when you use Align to selection, you don’t need to link any layers. You are just on whatever layer you want to align in the layers palette, select whatever you want to align to, be it the canvas or another layer. The only layer that moves is the one you’ve targeted in the layer palette.

Isn’t photoshop great?! So many ways to do the same exact thing! 🙂

I actually did it Gary’s way just because his post was first and it worked great.

Great board.

Thanks for the help
