PS 6 Crashing

I’m using photoshop 6.0 on my dell pentium 3 with 512mb ram running Windows 98se and recently I have been experiencing problems. Once the program starts there are 10 – 15 second delays when I switch tools or colors, open files or start a new creation. This continues for about 5 minutes or so and then it completely locks up and I have to re-boot. I can’t even control, alt, delete to shut down the program. I’ve been using it for a few years now and it just started doing this recently. Any suggestions or info on how to solve this would be most appreciated.
