I am new to Photoshop. I have several images on several layers in a file. I want to make an odd shaped selection on one of the images and move that selection to another file. Then I want to use the exact same shape to do the same thing to another image on another layer, and repeat this for all images. How can I do this?

Thanks,

Peter

It’s easy to do this if the files are the same size … make the selection on the first file and then save it as an alpha channel … Select – Save Selection does this … leave this file open … on subseqent files do Select – Load Selection and for ‘document’ select the first file name and for ‘channel’ select the one you just saved (give it a meaningful name).

Well, they are actually different layers in the same file. They are different size images, but I want to select the exact same shape and size from each. I wonder if your method would work in this case?

Thanks,

It would. But you can also just choose Reselect as long as the file has not been closed. It will give you back the last selection.

But learn about Channels as soon as you can because that’s one of the most powerful features in Photoshop.

Ah, OK … you faked me out when you wrote "move that selection to another file" 🙂

Yes, it’s even easier staying with the same image since the same selection will still be active as you switch from layer to layer … I’d still recommend saving off the selection as an alpha channel just in case you hose it up somehow … the Save Selection and Load Selection commands mentioned in the first post will save a permanent copy of the selection and let you re-load it as often as you want, even after you’ve closed and re-opened the file (by ‘file’ I mean the .psd or .tiff document).
