I played around with a scenic, lots of blue sky, no clouds; reflecting pond in front of mountain.
Step 1 was selecting the sky with the magic wand tool. Select|Similar to add to selection.
Step 2 was copying the ‘sky’ to a layer. Layer|New|Layer via copy. Step 3 was unstaturating both layers. Image|Adjustment|Desaturate Step 4 was Layer|Adjustments|Brightness/Contrast. "-80" pleased my eye; sky was darker than the "real" B&W + red filter.
I had trouble with areas in branches against the sky, and the sky/treeline in the reflection.
Others may have simply used Mode = Grayscale, or one of the other methods to remove color.
I had taken the color shot with color slide film, and was able to compare the same shot taken with B&W print film.
I also had trouble with halos along the sky/land interface. Feathering selections may have helped. Or extracting the mountain….

I think the subject says it — what are your tips or tools for getting
that
"red filter + B&W film" look, starting with a digital color image?
