In the Knowledge Base Tutorial it says: "Adobe Gamma Loader application applies settings in the Adobe Gamma.cpl file to the system and applies calibration settings you saved for your monitor at the system level."

Isn’t that what windows is supposed to do? I mean, I can load ICM/ICC-profiles with the color management dialogue in the windows display properties (advanced).

Both apply ICM/ICC-profiles? So, can I remove the Gamma Loader then?

John,
NO !! <GRIN> ( I always wanted to do that ! )

It’s a little more complex than that. Adobe Gamma utility both calibrates your monitor to a "standard" state, and creates a profile for color managed applications to use. The Gamma Loader then takes the color offsets calculated by the Gamma utility and loads them into the LUT ( look up table ) of your video card at startup. Once your LUT has been loaded you will see a transformation of the screen colors. At this time, an image viewed on your calibrated system should look the same as an image on my calibrated system, using a color managed application.

Without the Gamma loader, your monitor’s calibration and profile is not really in effect.

Lots of good information on the subject at both:

You don’t have to know an awful lot about color management to use Elements, since it doesn’t have the many conversion tools of Photoshop, but it does follow the same rules, so keep color management in the back of your mind <G> .

Well, ok let’s see if I got it right: Adobe Gamma Loader loads the monitor profile I previously created with the Adobe gamma.cpl utility. The profile is a ICM file. So Gamma Loader is responsible to load the ICM file and adjust colors to match my monitor. Fine.

Now why can I specify a monitor profile in the Windows(!) display properties dialogue as well? I mean… it seems that Windows is acutally doing the SAME thing as the gamma loader (load profile, adjust colors)? So what’s the difference between the Adobe loader and the Windows thing?

Thanks
John

P.S.
Thanks for the links Brent! Plenty of info there… 🙂

Adobe Gamma does 2 _different_ things.

1) It loads a LUT to the graphics card to bring the monitor to a calibrated state (I.e. roughly correct colour temperature, gamma etc). This has nothing to do with the monitor profile, and associating a profile in Windows will not do this step. When Adobe Gamma loads the LUT, you will see the display change.

2) It associates an ICC profile with the monitor. This is the same as is done by associating the profile in Windows. Note that this does not make any difference to the display – you could associate a totally screwed up profile and the display would look the same in Windows and most applications. The only time this profile is used is in colour management aware applications (e.g. Photoshop) – in these applications, the profile is used to correct the display for the monitor
characteristics described by the profile.

Windows may associate that profile with your display, but it does nothing to adjust the video LUT to the calibrated values obtained in the Adobe Gamma process. Other profiling software packages do similar things. Monaco Gamma has a Gamma loader which adjusts the video LUT on startup to match the calibrated settings. Windows doesn’t do this by itself. Bill Gates doesn’t really care ! <G>
