I just opened a file which I haven’t worked on in months. The problem is that on every layer I have blending effects added, but on the layers palette under every layer, the eye is grayed out for every effect. This is on every layer which has effects applied. When I go in to edit any of the effects, the preview box is checked but I can’t preview until I uncheck the box!!??

The image is RGB and it is only happening to this document. Any new layer I create will not show layer effects either, however I’m able to add new ones…you just can’t see them!

Just so we’re on the same page here…

On the layers palette, you’re seeing that a layer is enabled (with the eye icon) right? And underneath the layer is the word "Effects" and next to that the eye is present, but grayed out? If "Effects" doesn’t have an eye, then the effects are disabled, and each effect (like drop shadow) will have an eye that is grayed out.

Peace,
Tony

Exactly. The layer is enabled and the eye icon is there next to "Effects", just grayed out. When I click on the eye to disable it and hold down the mouse the eye turns black, like it’s being enabled and when I let go it hides the eye. I’ve never seen this before. Strange stuff.

Okay. I gotcha. All images or this one only?

Sounds like vid drivers, to me, but only because of the black eye. For giggles and grins, go into the System Applet of control panel and find Video Hardware acceleration and set it to NONE. Then try again. If it goes away, it’s a video driver issue.

You can also try resetting your preferences per the procedure in the FAQ.

If it’s only happening with this particular image, then, well, I’m stuck. Rebuild the image by dragging/copying layers over to a new image, I guess.

Peace,
Tony

Nope, it’s not a vid driver issue at all. It’s solely in this particular file. I also reset my Pshop preferences and nothing has changed! So it has to be a setting in this file somewhere. Or maybe it’s just corrupt. I dragged an image with an effect to another document and the effect shows! I guess it’s rebuild time.

is the file read only? (check in explorer or file browser).

Right click on the f icon next to the layer and choose ‘Show all effects’

I dragged an image with an effect to another document and the effect shows!

Interesting. Did you try MarkATS’ idea? I’d bet that’s the answer cuz I just duplicated your symptoms by right clicking on the "f" and choosing Hide.

Give it a shot. Nice call btw Mark.

Peace,
Tony

LOL! Alright, that was one of those moments where at the beginning you feel like "This is a problem that’s stumped ME! An expert!". Now I feel more like crawling under my desk in shame. That was it! Thanks MarkATS.
