I’m making some fonts for work. I’m doing a terrific job creating the letters in illustrator, what I don’t know is how to convert the vector shapes into a working font that I can download into Photoshop. Any suggestions where I could go to find out what to do next?
You could start with the alt.binaries.fonts FAQ and newsgroup, (Many thanks to James Goffin for his continuing work
in maintaining it)
http://www.abf.jamesgoffin.co.uk/ http://www.jgoffin.freeserve.co.uk/abf/faq.htm Then progress to the Pyrus (FontLab) web site:
http://www.fontlab.com/index.php Be sure to look through their FAQ section(s). You really should consider using one of their font editors … *much* easier than trying to assemble a font in either Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw
And then possibly look over the Adobe manual on creating Multiple Master fonts [Multiple Master fonts are essentially obsolete, but the general font design principles outlined in this publication are still good) …
The Adobe Type Topics page is
http://www.adobe.com/type/topics/main.html The "Designing Multiple Master Typefaces" is
http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/opentype/cvrto c.pdf Or look through the Micro$oft Typography pages at
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/default.mspx At one time they had a rather comprehensive design ‘manual’ on-line.
And last, but "certainly not least:"
The voluminous reference source on virtually anything about fonts and typography … Luc Devroye’s site at McGill University
