what is the difference between activation and registration? I activated my MS Office XP recently, but I didn’t do anything except click on a button that said "Activate Product", and then a little windows popped up saying something about "you do not need to enter any personal information if you do not wish to" so I skipped filling in all the blanks and just clicked on activate and it was done. Is adobe’s just as easy or do you have call in and sit on hold etc. And if I do activate it, what if I want to re-sell it later on?

thanks –

Patrick

Patrick,

Activation and registration are two totally separate events, and not related to one another.

Activation is an anti-piracy measure that electronically enforces the EULA you agreed to when you installed Photoshop. No personal information is transmitted or retained by Adobe. It is mandatory, and can be done via internet or phone. Most do it by internet.

Registration is where you tell them who you are and what your serial number is so that you are entitled to the benefits of registration, such as tech support. It is optional.

In regards to selling the software, you need to read the EULA about license transfers.

Hope that helps some.

Peace,
Tony

It is optional.

optional but handy, if you lose or damage your original disk… without registration they have no idea who you are or what you own. with registration, you can get a replacement or a serial # for for your lost disk… handy when upgrading and the original is lost or damaged.

my rule of thumb is if it cost more than 50 bux, i register it.

Activation is the method that Adobe uses to prevent "piracy" at the expense of inconviencing the rest of its customers. It appears to be a new section of their "Customer satisfaction" policy.

Registration? It is supposidally to drive a stake in the ground that proves that you own that particular version of a product. Now don’t believe it. You can’t use a previous "registration" to qualify for a offered upgrade. Don’t believe it? Check my treads here about going from 7.01 to CS! It took almost a month and eight FAXs to get what they owed me.

Cool Dave I didn’t know that. But I must say being in Australia I feel a bit duped by registering.

I was lured by offers of freebies only to see in the later registration screens when it was too late, that being an Aussie – I get nothing. That’s not good enough (I’m smiling but hurt if you could see me right now!). Still a little peeved to be honest.
