I have a circle shape object I would like to crop

It is currently a square.

I would like to crop the corners of the circle so they are transparent.

This would leave a circle object complete, with the corners transparent to use my HTML background color.

What should I use.

I tried the magic wand. Which highlighted the outer, but I was not able to crop.

any suggestions?

Cropping is only square, sorry.

It is currently a square.

And it will stay that way in the conceivable future.

I would like to crop the corners of the circle so they are transparent.

Crop close to the circle, then delete the area you wish to be transparent.

This would leave a circle object complete, with the corners transparent to use my HTML background color.

What should I use.

Save it in Gif format (Save for Web option).

I tried the magic wand.

Inverse the selection, cut and paste. Turn off the visibility of the lower layer and Save for Web.

Which highlighted the outer, but I was not
able to crop.

Nor will you be able to.

any suggestions?

First save the photoshop file in case you need to come back to it later, then:

1) Use the circular marquee tool to draw a circle around your image.
2) Press Ctrl + J (copy the selection to new layer)
3) Ctrl + D (de-select the circle)
4) Delete the original background
5) Save image as a .Gif file.
Gif files support transparancy and can be any shape. Jpeg files are opaque and need to be rectangular.
You could also try feathering the selection in Step 1 so your image would blend in with the html background for a better efffect.

Hope this helps.

If the name of the layer on the layer palette is "-Background-" yo should start by double clicking the layer it’s on to make it a norma layer rather than a "background" layer. This way when you delete any o the layer it won’t be filled in by the background colour on the toolba swatches. If it’s something like "Layer 0" then you don’t need to worr about this step.

Get your rulers up on the document (Ctrl+R (PC)/Cmd+R (Mac)) then dra a horizontal and a vertical guide from the rulers onto the centre o your circle. The guides won’t print, or be save in the image, and i you want to see the image without them just press Ctrl+; (PC)/ Cmd+ (Mac). Pressing this key combination toggles the guides on and off.

Go to the marquee tool (dotted square) on the Toolbar and click an hold until the menu flies out its other options for this tool. Choos the oval marquee then position your cursor over the point where you two guides meet (should be the very centre of your circle). Hold dow Shift+Alt (Mac and PC) and click and drag out towards the edges of you circle. This will draw a perfect circle (Shift does this) using you starting point as the centre (and Alt does this). Release the mous button before you take your fingers off the keyboard. If it isn’t perfect circle just use the Alt key.

Now invert your selection (Select > Inverse or Ctrl+Shift+ (PC)/Cmd+Shift+i(Mac)) and press Ctrl+X (PC)/Cmd+X (Mac) to cut out th surround.

Create a new layer and put it behind the layer you’ve just been workin on, then fill it with the colour of your webpage. File > Save For Web Choose JPEG at 60%. Though a GIF supports transparency it will give yo a very jagged outline on curves. This method (Choose JPEG…) wil output a rectangular image, but with the background will be the colou you desire
