I have an educational version (5.5) that use to run on a Dell 500MHZ PIII running Windows 98 SE.

I recently bought a 3GHZ P4 running Windows XP Pro. Photoshop installs with no errors, but during app. startup the Init banner either stops very quickly or gets to "Initializing ICC" and then the app. quits with no error message (not a hang or GPS, just goes away). My friend is running the same version on a 1GHZ P3 with WIndows XP Pro.

Any ideas???

Sounds like a corrupt ICC profile. There’s details on how to handle this in the FAQs.

WHen I re-installed PhoToshop (after removing it), wouldn’t that fix it??

No, it wouldn’t, Dave.

Chances are you have a bad monitor profile. That’s something that got installed with the O/S or monitor, not with Photoshop.

Are you talking about MAC or Windows? If Windows, I looked for ICC profile in the Forum and only found references to MAC OS. How do I resolve this in Windows.

Also, the init does not always stop in the same place. Sometimes I can tell the last message had to do with ICC, but sometimes it is very early and the messages go by too quick to tell were it quit!

This a Windows Forum – Thus, I am talking about Windows…..

Run Adobe Gamma from the C/Panel.

Load the sRGB profile as your starting point. CHANGE the text in the description box to something meaningful (My Monitor?).

Run through the on-screen instructions and finally SAVE TO A NEW FILENAME – otherwise you will over-write your sRGB profile.

If Photoshop still halts, then you will need to move the ICC profiles (*.icc and *.icm) you do not need from
%system%\Windows\system32\spool\drivers\color to another folder

have you tried just resetting the prefs? since you say it doesn’t always stop in the same place…
