I can’t work out how to draw a circle on a photo without it being filled in. Can’t find it in the manual and all I seem to be able to do is draw a circle with a solid fill. I need to pot a ring around a face in a crowd, and I’m running out of time.

Hi Gerald,

Use the circle selection tool to select the area where you want to place the circle.

Go to Edit/Stroke and chose a size an colour for the stroke.

Press OK and you’ll have you circle on the image.

Make your circle Shape. Double-click on the layer to bring up the Layer Style dialog. Pull the Fill Opacity slider down to zero. Check Stroke and set color, size etc.

The other suggestions will work, but this will too.

Use the Elipse Tool with the tool set to Shape Layers and make a circle wherever you want it. Then…

– Hold down CTRL to turn your curser into the Path selection tool

– Click on the circle you just made to select it

– Release CTRL

– Hold down ALT and hit CTRL+T

– Release all keys

– Now, hold down ALT+Shift and grab a corner of the Transform box and adjust it down so it’s just a tad bit smaller than your starting circle.

– Release the mouse button, release all keys. Hit Enter.

– Now in the tool option bar (the bar below the normal menus) there is a button labelled "subract from shape area (-)", click on it and that should make your circle into a ring.

This is different from the other methods in that this ring is made with vector shapes not pixels.

If you have Photoshop Elements 2, just use the paint and the brush, select a color and the size of the paint brush,( #1 or# 2 and just circle the face. this should do it with out filling it in.

Yes, it’d be cheaper and better quality than hiring someone like this.
