In Quick Mask, sometimes I need to blur some edges of a selection differently from other edges. Lassoing the edges separately and applying Gausian Blur with different values works fine except for one problem. The meeting point of the two lossoings ends up with very uneven blurring. Is there a better approach to do this?

Put the material that you wish to effect on its own layer — either a copy of the entire image or a selection.
Go ahead and blur that layer all you want, paying attention only to the edges you are interested in and ignoring its effect on all other edges. Add a layer mask to the layer (click on the second icon from the left at the bottom of the layers palette with that layer active)
Paint in the layer’s mask with a soft, black brush on the areas that you do *not* want the blur effect to appear.
You can leave a partial blur on some of the edges by varying the opacity of the brush as you paint.

Good luck! . . . . patrick

Feather the selection before you apply Gaussian Blur.

only filter/blur/LensBlur supports variable blur radius
use it instead gaussian

Hi there!

If you are referring to variable focus blur, that gives the impression of variable field depth in the background, it’s better that you construct a map of depths. The map is constructed using the following procedure (in direct standard mode):

1- Add a fresh layer.
2- Have a brush handy (hardness is 0%).
3- Fine-tune drawing of black strokes. The darkest the stroke, the blurrier place it will be later.
4- If you see that the transitions are not so satisfactory, you may Select>All, then apply Gaussian blur to taste!
5- If you are happy with the blurring map you did, just Ctrl-Click the map’s layer. This will load the transparency mask necessary to apply Gaussian blur, or lens blur (whichever good for you).
6- Choose image layer, and apply the blur as you like.

This method is better than working in Quick Mask mode, and will apply the blurring (or any other filter) once and for all. You will be able to fine-tune selections without the need for saving selections in separate channels, until you are completely happy with final mask. Some masks are very complex and you may spend a lot of time constructing it. So a map on a separate layer will be saved with the file as a layer and not as a channel (or many channels).
