Hello Experts,
I have PS6 on Win98SE.

Is it possible to write Actions programmatically? If yes then How?

Thank you,

Syed Zeeshan Haider.

yes, you can script them with the scripting engine. i believe there’s a download in the ps downloads area. rather I KNOW there’s one for 7, but not sure if you need to DL it with 6 or if it’s already included. It may already be on the disk… it’s called the Photoshop Scripting Plug-In.

Just to clarify: you CAN write scripts using the Scripting engine, but you cannot write actions (ATN files) using the the Scripting engine. So, in theory, you can do almost anything using either method, but they are not the same. Actions are binary files and cannot be edited except within the Actions palette within Photoshop itself.

FYI: ImageReady’s actions [ISA files] are script-based and may be edited with a standard text editor.

As Dave said, the Scripting plug-in is an optional download/install for PS7 and includes the required documentation. However, the plug-in is not available for PS6.

FYI: The Scripting Plug-in is installed by default with PSCS along with the manuals (in your "Photoshop CS\Scripting Guide" folder – alternatively, the documentation is also available on your installation CD).

Thanks trevor. You’re right in pointing out the diff. between actions and scripting. The one thing missing from actions though is conditional actions and branching. (although I hear IR CS is now doing simple if then else now, haven’t checked it out yet.)

However, the plug-in is not available for PS6.

But then the full sdk is on the 6 disk so you can use that via javascript/vbscript or other language. 🙂

I have downloaded some Actions from
http://www.2morrow.dk/75ppi/coolpix/actions/ seem to be quite intelligent as if they were written programmatically.

I’m sure that if Mathias reads this thread, he will confirm that he did indeed create these in the Photoshop Actions palette – not programmatically.

Not possible with an action, but possible with a script.

If you are asking me then:

Yes, I can program in a limited context. What’s important is that I enjoy programming. I know JavaScript and Visual Basic 6 so far. Both learnt by self teaching.

Thanks!
