I’m reading the novel "The DaVinci Code," and since I am an amateur symbolist and graphics person myself, I am totally fascinated. (So are enough other people that the book has been on the NYT bestseller list for 40 weeks.)

Like many people (Google for "clear copy of the Last Supper" to see what I mean), I want a decent copy so I can study the fascinating details given in the book.

The best copy I can find is really bad. I sent it to Photoshop and added a bit of blur to get rid of the endless dots. I then sent it to Image Optimizer and way over-optimized it because the resulting mushiness actually made the few details a little clearer.

My question is this: does anyone know (a) where I can get a clear copy for free, or (b) a technique (I have time but not money) for restoring a badly deteriorated DaVinci JPEG?

Have you gone here? There are two of the fresco, one before restoration and one after, go to page six and you will find a very good .jpg of the oil. It is a copy by a pupil.

This is a wonderful web site, much more enjoyable if you have broadband or DSL.

Walter, i am curious as to what it is you were looking for in the detail?

Is it the Mary Magdalene that is been touted as James the less? I think it is quite clear that the figure to Jesus’s right (your left as you view) is female.

I also find it interesting that this has always been an issue of some contention in the church, but if you look at the painting, It’s a girl!

Cheers
Dave

Yes, it’s a girl, and it’s Mary Magdalene. I won’t tell you her role in the book, but it’s pivotal.

Other points of interest (all according to the book):

* Mary and Jesus form a V, which is the symbol of the divine feminine, which the book says the Catholic church ruthlessly attempted to stamp out: sex is dirty, women have no rights, etc.

* Mary and Jesus also form a M, an esoteric symbol for Mary Magdalene.

* Peter (the grouchy old dude to the left of Mary) was (says the book) violently against Jesus passing on his church through Mary rather than through him, and his threatening hand gesture means he wants to slit Mary’s throat.

Apparently when the early church made the shift from a matriarchal pagan world to a patriarchal "Christian" one, there were violent, repeated efforts to stamp out the feminine.

That’s what I figured you were doing. 🙂
All the best with the endeavour.

Leonardo was quite clever in his jabs at the Catholic church. A brilliant man, far ahead of his time and brutally honest about the realities and truths as laid out.

I understand that he was not so happy that the Catholic church was one of the only benefactors who could afford to give him patronage. The Medici family often proxied his disdane for the church I also understand.

I am also interested in the Last supper debate as well as the shroud of Turin that is allegedly made by Leonardo using an ancient form of …well, photography. Wherein cloth is soaked in silver nitrate and placed into a pinhole camera box to absorb light from a reflected image/object.

It is likely that the head on the shroud is Leonardos own, while the body is a cadaver he used for study. The line seperating head from body is really quite clear and also anyone who knows anything about images caused by pigment of any sort on a draped cloth will leave a distorted image of the entire head and not a flat front on image as is seen on the shroud.

The fact that the image is 3 dimensional in negative points to the use of the pinhole camera apparatus which was known to have been used as far back as 100-200 CE.

Again, have fun with your research.
Cheers
Dave

p.s are you at all interested in the theory that Akenhaten was actually Moses? lol.
