I got photoshop elements with my scanner, and love the photomerge feature under the file menu. I am a student and am interested in purchasing the full version of photoshop7 (I know CS is now out, but I can get a great deal on the "old" version at the student computer store). I played recently on a campus computer with photoshop7 installed and couldn’t easily find any "photomerge" feature in any of the menus – does photoshop7 not have a feature that photoshop elements has? How does one stitch multiple photos together in photoshop7?

PS7 does not have image stitching or panorama creation as a specific function although one can accomplish those things with some effort. I use PTAssembler. You can run Elements and PS7 on the same machine so just keep Elements loaded.

Thanks Gary. Does PTAssembler have the good "blender" or perspective type tools similar to elements? I looked at the website, and it looks like a darn good program. I will see it it meets my needs.

you can move the photomerge plugin to the ps 7 plugins folder and use it from within photoshop.

regular daryl p. has what files to copy written somewhere, but I’ve lost the link…

Allan, I regret to say that I haven’t had the chance to try Elements but I can tell you that PTAssembler is very effective. I have done a 3×3 stitch job (3 wide by 3 high, 9 files total) on a local historical landmark here and not one person has detected that the image was stitched. I did the perspective corrections in Photoshop. Of course, like Photoshop, PTAssembler has a bit of a learning curve. There may be other programs that are equal or better but that is my experience.

I’m trying to scan a very large wall map into my computer. Is it possible to stitch together something which is about 10 pages tall and 10 pages wide. If so, what would be the best software to do this. It is a black and white street map.

Thanks,

Chris

Ha All

I my self recommend Panorama Factory for stitching pans together. I am into Weather Photography and an active member of Australian Server Weather Association. I have used this Program now for 3 – 4 months and the control you have over the stitching process is Awesome.
It is well worth the download and try it out you won’t regret it.

Cheers
Ray.

Chris, assembling document scans like maps can be done with Photoshop. Be sure that your scanner is in a fixed or manual mode so that you don’t end up with slightly different shading on each page. Assembling 100 pages will be a lot of work resulting in a very large file. Unless this map is one-of-a-kind, I would check with some atlas/mapping companies like DeLorme or MapQuest and see if the file is already available.

Another thumbs up for PT Assembler over here. I’ve tried several other pano programs (including PS Photomerge), and nothing can touch PT Assembler for accuracy and flexibility. Yes, it takes a little getting used to, but well worth the effort for the results. Just work with it using the tutorial that’s linked from the download site.

If you’re serious about panos, you’ll find Max Lyon’s site very interesting:

Allan,

Sorry I’m late to the fold here. You can use your photomerge plug-in from PE with PS7 with no problem. I had the instructions at my website but now find that content missing. I’ll try and locate files and re-upload them. My hosting service was hacked into recently and all wesite files were lost, so I guess some are still missing. I’ll update you with a link when I get things fully re-established.

Regards,

Daryl

Yes. In addition to Panorama Factory, which is shareware with something like a 30-day free trial period, PanaVue’s Image Assembler is capable of this type of stitch. It also has a free demo, but as I recall it watermarks your stitch. You can check both of them out at these URLs:
