Communication Error when using USB ports

When printing in Photoshop 7.01 with my Epson 1280 or Epson 820, I often get a "Communication Error" message that appears in the print progress window. The printer stops printing, and all of the USB ports on my computer are shut down. This happens when using either of these printers. I then have to close Photoshop, restart it, and reprint until it happens again. I tried printing from the serial ports, and so far no comminication problems, and the printers do fine. I’ve tried changing cables, USB ports, running off the USB hub, and directly from the computer USB port, but the problem continues regardless of the configuration. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Which version of Windows do you have?
Is there any other USB activity going on?

Donald,

I wish I could remember the exact setting here, but I remember some problems related to the Epson 1270 and USB a few years back which may be a repeat issue again. What I do remember is that it was recommended that the printer be on a motherboard USB port and not on a hub. The other item I think had to do with the Advanced Settings options in the printer driver and changing something there. Since I’m not home where I can look at my driver settings, all I can suggest is that you try changing the advanced settings one at a time to see if your problem goes away. Among the options were bidirectional printing, spool to the printer first then print, or begin printing immediately, and others. I’m pretty certain the changes were not related to the spooling, so you might try the bidirectional printing option first, and then whatever else exists.

Good luck,

Daryl

Colin,

Sorry about the Win version ommission. I’m running Windows 98SE. The problem occurs when porting off hub or motherboard. Also occurs with all other USB devices unplugged from computer.

Daryl,

I’ll try disabling bi-directional printing, and then work with spooling option. Incidentally, when this problem occurs it is within about the first minute of printing. Could this indicate a spooling problem? I had assumed that since this happens with 2 printers that it is a Photoshop software problem, but maybe it’s an Epson soft ware problem. I’d appreciate additional comments anyone else may have. Thanks.

Sorry Donald, but I have an idea I can see the culprit. USB support in 98 is often somewhat marginal. USB 2 is even worse! Printers are usually OK, but the whole thing is a bit of a mess.

Donald,

Although my system is now running WinXP, I’ll offer that my 1270 driver settings have bi-direction printing enabled, spooling set to "start printing immediately", and "print spooled documents first". The other enabled option, and I’m nearly thinking this was the culprit with Win98 or Win2K (don’t recall which), is "Enable advanced features". In WinXP I have it enabled and have never had problems. However, it does provide a pop-up that states that compatibility issues may arise and that it can be disabled safely. So, if you have that same option with the 1280 driver and it is checked, then I suggest unchecking it.

Good luck,

Daryl

I called Epson Support yesterday, and they suggested the following: in Control Panel select Printers/Epson 1280/Properties/Utility/Speed and Progress/Monitoring Preferences/ and uncheck all the items in the "Select Notification" box. They said this would fix the problem, and this has occurred before. I’ll try it, but will try the other things that Daryl mentioned if it doesn’t work. Thanks to all for your help.
