I made an image with the pen tool (entirely pen tool) – it’s basically going to be a personal logo. But I’m having trouble with the pen tool. It seems to work funny – like when I click a point close by to make a small curve it makes a huge line that messes my image up. So I have to do it in short spaces then stroke it, pick up where I left off and it just seems to look bad.

Here’s my image in case you’re wondering:

What I need help with is tips on making the flames look better, if you look closely there are gaps and inconsistencies – it just looks tacky to me. Although this image is going to be shrunk, it still bothers me. Any tips for better looking flames?

Do you have the Shape option selected for the Pen by any chance? It’s the leftmost icon on the Options Bar. You should be using the middle one for paths only.
