I’m working on a poster, large scale, for print. It’s lots of photos and images, so I’m working in Photoshop (CS on a Win machine). I have 512MB Ram. The ‘image’ in question is approx. 185 Megs in size and it takes FOREVER to work on. I’m simply importing other images and arranging them and cropping away some backgrounds… no filters or anything (yet). I’m afraid to even use them! It takes like 2 min alone to just save it. The file is 22 inches by 46 inches and is a 150 dpi. I HAD it set to 300 dpi but there was no working in it at that speed. ANY SUGGESTIONS?? I’d really like to be able to zip through this dang thing as I have 3 more to do exactly like this… :S

It’s a Dell Latitude D600. Windows XP Pro. In a perfect world I’d love to have more ram, but I normally don’t do these types of projects (I do mostly web design) so don’t know if it would justify it. I need to get this project done and was just wondering if there were any tips (virtual mem, PS mem, etc) that might help me speed up a hair…

Well the old wisdom is that PS needs something like 3 times the amount of RAM to the file size on disk (is that right?) so you’ve already exceeded the 512 before you even allow for XP which is memory hungry indeed. RAM is cheap these days.

On a 512MB machine, set Photoshop’s memory percentage to 40% (as a first guess). Your system is going to be tight on memory, and Photoshop’s going to have to hit the disk a lot, so yeah, it’s not going to be a joy ride.
