As you know (or, will find out), there are other ways of achieving grayscale. You might want to try the Desaturate choice; or, select Hue/Saturation and move the Saturation slider all the way to the left.
After that, it really becomes interesting to ‘improve’ the grayscale picture.
Or Adjustment Layer, Channel Mixer. Just make sure that the total of all of your Channel settings = ~100, i.e. Red=50, Green=30, Blue=20. Explore each of these to get the B/W that looks best, and tweak them to = 100. Also, with Channel Mixer, in an Adjustment Layer, you can always, easily go back to your normal color mode.
Russell Brown has a fine tutorial that allows for fine adjustments as well, and I have used it to a fairtheewell. It involves a couple of adjustment layers in Hue-Saturation, and you can adjust 6 colors with either Hue or Saturation.
However, I am now doing a bunch of work for a newspaper that’s printed ca. 100 lpi, and have reverted to simply converting to greyscale, adjusting Levels a bit before submission, kinda the other end of the scale, as I am often submitting 12-20 photos of an event or game.
The other thing I do to assist the Production person is to downsize the images significantly, and find that Dr. Brown’s Image processor invaluable for this.
Better way? Better as in maximizing contrast via an action? Other steps that could be an action or a script to prepare for this kind of end use?
