Hi,
This photo;
http://www.pbase.com/choco1/image/50419235

has some faint coloring in the black areas that I am unable to clone away. These colors show up in any print over 13 inches.

Is there a way I can put a pure black in that area?

I have not mastered masking well enough to pull the main image out to place on a black background.

Any suggestions?

Warm Regards,
Lou

if you just want it to be black, just use the paintbrush on those areas. Why clone black, when you can paint black?

As for masks, I’ve found the easiest thing to do is make a copy of the layer, then just erase the parts you don’t need, which will leave you with your image. If you screw it up at all, you’ll still have the original that you can start over again from. (Make the original invisible and just work with the copy)

Duplicate layer, adjust levels to get total black, then use history brush to bring back the good stuff, then flatten the layers.

That’s crude and clumsy, and if you make a small mistake, you have to start over.

Don’t be afraid of masks. A layer mask is incredibly easy to use, and much easier than erasing the parts of the layer you don’t want.

Try converting the image mode to CMYK. In the channels palette, duplicate the black channel and then use levels (moving the black slider over) to convert the dark gray to black. Make a selection of the channel and return to the layers palette. Invert your selection and fill it with black – just about perfect.
