Adding text above a shape layer does not work like it did in PS 7. I’m not clear exactly what it is doing in CS. It creates a text layer but the text in this layer does not act like in other text layers. For example:

1) the surrounding text box has a small circle on it. What is that for and what does it mean?

2) Transforming (scaling) seems only to affect the size of the text box and does not scale the text. What’s up with that?

Clearly, there is some new feature or bug here. I can’t find any documentation that sheds any light on this.

Does anyone have a clue?

Is my message showing up?

Yes, but it’s the weekend and sometimes it takes longer than 60 minutes to get an answere.

Jerry,

The small circle is the rotating point. (which can be dragged to another location)

Scaling does scales the text here…

Ronald,

That is not the behavior that I get. To be clear, the text I created was above a shape layer and it definitely works different from other text in Photoshop CS. Transform does not change the text size and I’m still not clear on how and what the little circle is on the text outline.

Can you perhaps go into a bit more detail?

Thanks,

Jerry

Well, Jerry, you have stumbled across the Type-in-a-path feature. By using the type tool and clicking inside a shape, you’ve created type that fits within a copy of that shape. The circle is the overflow indicator – it will change if you type in too much text for the shape.

When resizing the path that contains the text, holding the control key down will scale the text along with the path. Otherwise, it’s just scaling the wrapping path the text is using.

If you have a shape layer and you want a regular type layer, holding the shift key down will force that. Or, alternatively, create a new blank layer first.

I see. I gather this is new in CS. If I hold down the Shift key when creating text the insert cursor changes and I can enter text normally. Thanks for the explaination.
